Angrboða
Mother of Fenrir · Mother of Jörmungandr · Mother of Hel
Angrboða in Norse tradition
Fire failed to destroy Angrboða. After the attempt, her half-burnt heart rose again in bodily form. She dwelt in the Ironwood as the “old one”. There she fostered Fenrir’s kinsmen, who later left the wood at Ragnarök and attacked Midgard.
Her name meant “the one who brought grief”. Loki fathered Fenrir, the Midgard serpent and Hel with Angrboða. She was their mother and nourisher. She was also linked with beings associated with witchcraft, bloodthirst and hatred of the gods.
