Fulla

A golden band circles Fulla’s forehead, above her flowing hair. Snorri describes her as a virgin. She is a goddess of abundance and one of the Asynjur. Fulla is Frigga’s sister and favourite attendant. She carries Frigga’s jewel box, which contains magical tools used in special ceremonies, and helps her mistress with her toilet.

Fulla’s place is in Frigga’s household and service, rather than in a myth of her own. She safeguards the jewel box and receives a magic ring sent back from Niflheim by the dead Nanna. This reference does not establish a role in the story of Baldr. Fulla’s name appears in skaldic kennings for gold and for ‘woman’. She is probably identical with Volla, the goddess named in the Second Merseburg Charm, but her exact identity remains uncertain. She may be an independent deity or another name for Freyja. Her appearance in skaldic poetry from the tenth century suggests that she was not a late allegory of abundance.
