Heitsi-eibib in African tradition
Heitsi-Eibib meets Han-Gai-Gaib after passing the kraal without stopping to greet its owner. Han-Gai-Gaib sends a messenger to bring him in and challenges him to a dangerous game. A stone set in Han-Gai-Gaib's forehead normally bounces back at anyone who throws it, killing the challenger and sending the body into a great hole. Heitsi-Eibib sees the danger and changes the terms. He asks Han-Gai-Gaib to close his eyes, then strikes him behind the ear instead of throwing the stone at his forehead. Han-Gai-Gaib falls dead into the pit. Heitsi-Eibib curses the messenger and continues on his way towards the place of the lion in the tree.

Heitsi-Eibib and Han-Gai-Gaib
Heitsi-Eibib travelled on until he reached the kraal of Han-Gai-Gaib. He passed it without stopping to greet its owner. Han-Gai-Gaib noticed the slight and sent a messenger to invite him into the kraal. When Heitsi-Eibib eventually came, Han-Gai-Gaib challenged him to a game. The challenge concealed a deadly trick. Han-Gai-Gaib had a stone set in the centre of his forehead, and he invited visitors to throw it at him. Whenever someone accepted, the stone bounced back, killed the person who had thrown it, and sent the body into a great hole.
Heitsi-Eibib understood what the game was designed to do. When Han-Gai-Gaib challenged him, Heitsi-Eibib did not throw the stone directly at the forehead. He told Han-Gai-Gaib that his eyes must first be closed, so that the throw could be made. Han-Gai-Gaib followed the instruction and shut his eyes. Heitsi-Eibib then used the stone in a different way, striking him behind the ear. The blow killed Han-Gai-Gaib, and his body fell into the pit that had received the earlier victims. Heitsi-Eibib next cursed the messenger who had brought him to the kraal. He then went on his way, reaching the place where a lion lived up a tree. The journey continued, but the deadly game had ended with its maker caught by his own challenge.
