In pre-Roman Italy, Jupiter was known as Jupiter Latirus. In archaic Rome, he formed part of the Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus triad. He was the supreme or chief Roman god, associated with the sky, rain, sun, moon, thunder, and lightning. Saturn and Ops were his parents. Neptune was his brother, and Juno was his consort. He protected Rome, guarded the land, defended the Republic, and was honoured as Jupiter Capitolinus and Jupiter Optimus Maximus.
