Math fab Mathonwy in Celtic tradition
Math is the lord at whose court Gwydion reports that small pigs from Annwn belong to Pryderi. Gwydion persuades Pryderi to exchange them for horses, hounds and shields, then leads the pigs north. The swine are pursued, and the conflict brings fighting between their followers. A peace is made and Pryderi gives hostages, but men continue shooting as the party travels. Pryderi sends an embassy to Math, asking him to restrain his people and leave the dispute between Pryderi and Gwydion.

Math at Court in the Swine Conflict
At Math’s court, Gwydion reports the unfamiliar swine brought to Pryderi from Annwn and asks leave to obtain them. Math asks who owns the animals and how they might be gained, then permits Gwydion to go south. Gwydion exchanges enchanted gifts for the herd, but the deception lasts only briefly. As Pryderi’s forces gather, Math learns at Caerdathyl that one-and-twenty Cantrevs are pursuing them. The people of Gwynedd take their stand at Maenor Penardd and Maenor Coed Alun. Pryderi attacks, and the men of the South are forced to flee.
The armies pursue one another, and Pryderi gives hostages to secure a truce. When foot soldiers resume shooting, Pryderi sends an embassy asking Math to restrain his people and settle the quarrel with Gwydion. Math refuses to compel Gwynedd’s men to fight for his sake, though he is willing to face Pryderi himself if that is allowed. Pryderi insists on demanding his rights in person. He and Gwydion meet in single combat, and Gwydion’s strength, fierceness and magic kill Pryderi. The men of the South return grieving for their lord and lost warriors; Gwynedd’s people go back in triumph. Gwydion asks Math to free the hostages rather than keep them imprisoned. Math agrees, and the pledged men are released to return south.
