Surabhi (Kamadhenu) in Indian tradition
Surabhi is dragged by Vishvamitra's soldiers after they try to take her away by force. Sticks and lashes drive her anger higher as the men pull her from place to place. She answers the attack by releasing burning embers from her tail and producing armed groups from different parts of her body. Her tail, dung, urine and froth become sources of successive armies, each appearing before Vishvamitra's eyes in armour and carrying weapons. The troops surround the soldiers in groups, shower them with weapons, and scatter the large army in panic. Surabhi's eyes become red and her bellows turn thunderous as the assault continues. Her episode centres on her response to the soldiers who dragged her away and the armed hosts she created against them.

Surabhi Defeats Vishvamitra's Army
In Mahabharata Vol. 1 (Penguin Translated Texts), Vishvamitra's soldiers dragged Surabhi from place to place and struck her with sticks and lashes. Their attack increased her anger. Her eyes became red with rage, her bellows grew thunderous, and she turned towards the army that was trying to carry her away. Burning embers poured from her tail as she blazed like the midday sun. She attacked while the soldiers were still dragging and striking her, and the army faced the force her anger produced.
Surabhi then produced armed hosts from her own body. An army of pahlavas came from her tail, while shabaras and shakas emerged from her dung and yavanas from her urine. From her froth she produced further groups, including pundras, kiratas, dramidas, Simhalas, barbaras, daradas and mlecchas. The troops appeared before Vishvamitra's own eyes, dressed in different armour and carrying different weapons. Surabhi's ferocious hosts surrounded the soldiers, placing five or seven against each man. They poured a shower of weapons upon Vishvamitra's large army, and every single soldier dispersed and fled in panic. She swooned with anger.
