Titanomachy

A ten-year war shook the order of the gods as the Titans fought the Olympian gods for rule. This struggle was called the Titanomachy. The Titans held their stronghold on Mount Othrys, while Zeus and his brothers and sisters stood on Olympus. The conflict was so intense that heaven, earth and sea were shaken. Zeus gained the aid of the Hecatoncheires and Cyclopes, whose weapons helped break the deadlock. The Olympians then overthrew Cronus and the Titans.

The Titanomachy has no parentage or bodily form in the surviving passages. It is a divine power struggle arising from the succession of Cronus and the threat that one of his sons would overcome him. Its place in myth is as the war that transfers rule from the Titans to the Olympians. After their defeat, many Titans were confined in Tartarus, where the Hecatoncheires guarded them. Oceanus, Helios, Atlas, Prometheus, Epimetheus and Menoetius escaped this imprisonment. Gaia later bore Typhon to seek revenge for the Titans held in Tartarus.
