Lucina in Roman tradition

New life passed from the dark womb into the light of day under the name Lucina. She was a Roman goddess of childbirth. Lucina was not an independent deity. She was chiefly an aspect of Juno in her role as patron of women as wives.

Diana was also called Lucina when protecting mothers in labour, whether human or animal. Lucina therefore belongs to myths of childbirth and maternal protection, rather than having a separate story of her own. Ovid records births assisted by Lucina, including the birth of nine daughters to Euippe, wife of Pierus, and the birth of Adonis to Myrrha. Her Greek counterpart was Eileithyia, an individual deity who also reflected aspects of Hera and Artemis. These goddesses corresponded to Juno and Diana.
