Lupercus

Wolves, flocks, and fertility belong to Lupercus’s sphere. He is an ancient Italian god in the Roman tradition, associated with fertility, the care of flocks, and wolves. No surviving tradition gives him a bodily form, named parentage, birth, or other origin. Nor does it preserve a separate tale in which he acts as the central figure.

His place in ancient Italian religion rests on function rather than on a preserved narrative. He belongs to the religious world of ancient Italy as a deity connected with fertility, flocks, and wolves. In some accounts, he is equated with Faunus. No tradition explains whether this equation reflects shared parentage, a transformation, or a separate identity. No further genealogy, cult location, ritual, or named service is given. Lupercus is therefore known through his divine associations and his occasional identification with Faunus, rather than through a myth of his own.
