Terpsichore in Greek tradition
Terpsichore bore the title ‘She Who Delighted in the Choral Dance’ and joined the nine Muses. Her title connected her with choral dance. The Muses sang together, shared one mind, set their hearts upon song, and kept their spirits free from care.
Terpsichore was a daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, whose name meant Memory. She joined the company of the Muses rather than a separate cycle of myths. Together with the Graces, the Muses were called ‘queens of song’. The gods delighted in the Graces when they danced to Apollo’s lyre, and the Muses accompanied them. Terpsichore belonged to this divine company of song, choral dance, and the gods.
