Urania’s Birth Among the Muses
Zeus united with Mnemosyne for nine nights. From this union, the nine Muses were born. Urania was one of them, born with Calliope, Cleio, Melpomene, Euterpe, Erato, Terpsichore, Thaleia, and Polymnia. Mnemosyne, daughter of Ouranos and Gaea, was their mother, and Zeus was their father.
The Muses were created after the Olympian gods had defeated the Titans. The victorious gods asked for divinities who could preserve their deeds in song. The Muses therefore belonged at first to music, song, and dance. Mortals and immortals honoured them. Apollo led them on Olympus, and their presence formed part of its banquets and festivities.
As time passed, the Muses received different fields of art and learning. Urania became associated with astronomy and astrology, and later with the natural sciences and philosophy. Her name, Ourania, means “The Heavenly One”. The other Muses were Calliope, associated with epic poetry; Cleio, with history; Melpomene, with tragedy; Euterpe, with music; Erato, with love poetry; Terpsichore, with dance; Thaleia, with comedy; and Polymnia, with sacred poetry. These associations belong to later accounts of the Muses and their functions.
